Huntington Forensic Science Courses Prove Popular
A pair of forensic science courses is available to Huntington High School students and they have proved to be quite popular over the years. The two classes are among more than two dozen offered by the high school science department.
Forensic Science is a full year, one credit course designed for juniors and seniors. Participation requires completion of the Living Environment course and one additional Regents level science class.
“Crime solving techniques will be studied, as well as hands-on laboratory investigations in such areas as fingerprinting, physical evidence, forensic anthropology and forensic serology,” according to the course description listed in the high school curriculum guide. The course, which meets daily, requires students to complete a research paper or final project.
Advanced Forensics is a half-year, half-credit course offered to seniors. It’s recommended to students who seek advanced study in the field. Participation in it requires earlier completion of the other forensic science course.
“Students will concentrate on the theory and advanced practices of criminalistics as it applies to tool mark identification, footwear/tire identification, advanced blood stain analysis, questioned document examination, advanced forensic microscopy and forensic geology,” according to the course description. “Students will also be offered an introduction to cyber crime. This course will build upon the lectures offered in the previous forensic science course in topics such as genetics and DNA technologies, forensic toxicology and fingerprinting.”
Students enrolled in the course also study current cases appearing in the news. Participants are required to complete a research project at the end of the class. College credit is available through New York Institute of Technology.
